Shelterbox Book Club reaches £1m fundraising milestone

We are so proud that Shelterbox Book Club, the subscription product we developed with the international disaster relief charity four years ago, has raised a total of £1m!

GOOD was briefed by Shelterbox in 2018 to find an innovative new way for the charity to acquire and retain new supporters and grow regular donations.

We dug deep to discover not just why potential supporters would give, but what they cared about. We discovered an audience with a desire to widening their global horizons and learn more about different cultures. And so ShelterBox Book Club was born. It is the world’s first charity book club – bringing sustainable income to the charity, in return for inspiring reads from the countries and cultures where ShelterBox operates.

Reaching the £1m mark is hugely exciting. The increased recurring revenue year on year means the charity has been able to grow their support for those in need of emergency shelter around the world.

The magic of Shelterbox Book Club is in the supporter retention. The retention rate is incredibly high – in the first year 96% of sign ups continued to be current members after 12 months – unheard of in the charity sector.

The on-going value exchange is what makes Shelterbox Book Club unique, the community it continues to build, which is hugely exciting and we’re delighted the product has had such a tremendous impact.

Pete Esuola-Grant, GOOD’s Head of Planning says “In a world where charities need reliable regular income but the number of people giving cause-led regular gifts is declining – Book Club is a stand out example that a new way of imaging charity support is financially fruitful and really good fun. We see it as a shining light for lots more regular giving innovation in the years to come”
